Best bone broth

This bone broth recipe is not only delicious and easy to make but also provides numerous health benefits, particularly due to its high collagen content. Bone broth is an excellent source of collagen, which is a protein found in the connective tissues of animals.

Collagen, in particular, provides numerous benefits. It helps support skin health by reducing wrinkles and improving elasticity. Collagen also supports joint health by maintaining and repairing cartilage. Finally, collagen can be beneficial for gut health by strengthening the intestinal lining.

Additionally, bone broth can be especially helpful during an intermittent fast, to take the edge off, as it provides necessary nutrients without spiking insulin levels. I like to fast with bone broth if I’ve been stalled out or to help get into ketosis. The collagen and nutrients help to satiate without overdoing it. I usually only have 1-2 cups a day during a fast.

The gut, or gastrointestinal tract, is an essential part of our digestive system. It is responsible for breaking down food and absorbing nutrients. Additionally, the gut is home to trillions of bacteria, collectively known as the gut microbiome, which play a crucial role in our health.

Bone provide can help with a healthy gut microbiome which can help regulate immune function, and produce essential nutrients like vitamins B and K. However, factors like a poor diet, stress, and antibiotic use can disrupt the balance of the gut microbiome, leading to an increased risk of gut-related issues like inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, and leaky gut syndrome.

Bone broth can help improve gut health by providing the amino acids glycine and proline, which are essential for the production of collagen. This barrier plays a crucial role in preventing harmful substances, like bacteria and toxins, from entering the bloodstream and causing inflammation.

In addition to its collagen content, bone broth also contains compounds like glutamine, which is an amino acid that can help repair the gut lining and reduce inflammation. Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) are another class of compounds found in bone broth, and they help to maintain the integrity of the gut lining by providing a protective barrier against harmful substances.

Lastly, I find that preparing it like this gives me enough bone broth for over a month when consuming 1x a day. On average this costs about $20 to make and it’s less expensive and all-natural compared to buying powdered pre-packaged brands.

Beautiful liquid gold - homemade bone broth.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs. of marrow soup bones

  • water

  • 2 lbs. of ox tail

  • 2 tsp salt

  • 1 tsp pepper

  • 3 tbsp turmeric

  • 3 bay leaves

  • 1/2 cup ACV - Apple Cider Vinegar

Ingredients

  1. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and place oxtails on top. Season with salt and pepper. Place in oven for one hour. This will help bring out the flavor of the meat and give it a darker rich color.

  2. Place soup bones in the crockpot and cover with water. Add 1/2 cup ACV, seasoning, salt, pepper, turmeric and bay leaves.

  3. Cover and place crockpot on high for one hour while oxtails are in the oven.

  4. When oxtails are done, add them to crock pot, reduce cook for 12 hours. Let cool for 15 minutes.

  5. Use a large bowl and place a strainer inside the bowl to drain meat from the liquid. If desired, use a finer mesh strainer to strain again into the bowl.

I like to freeze the bone broth. So here are a couple options:

Once the liquid is cool, use a ladle to add it to mason jars. Fill to 2/3 full and then freeze. This leaves room for expansion. Or you can fill in ice cube trays and then use a plastic container or bag for the cubes when frozen.

Daily consumption: 1/4-1/2 cup from a mason jar or 2 ice cubes. Place in a mug with water and 1/4 tsp of salt and heat in the microwave for 1-2 minutes. Great way to add additional sodium into a ketogenic lifestyle!

Enjoy! 🥰
